Thomas’ Visit to Buckland Shelburne March 29, 2012
Dear Families,
Yesterday, Wednesday, March 28, 2012, the fifth and sixth grade students gathered in the library to hear Mr. Thomas Roberts-Wierzbowski present his program, “Life in a Wheelchair: A Disability Awareness Program”. Thomas, who is now a video producer, is a graduate of Mohawk Trail Regional High School and the University of Massachusetts . He visited us with his service dog, Stanley, and his assistant, Luke, to share three short videos that he produced and directed. The videos provided a glimpse of what life is like for a young adult in a wheelchair.
Following the videos, Thomas answered questions that were asked by students and staff. When asked how Stanley helps him, he shared some of the ways, and then Stanley demonstrated. In response to a question about his favorite sport, Thomas talked about the Buddy Baseball program he founded. This program allows kids with disabilities to play baseball with the help of a peer buddy.
We’re grateful to the Shelburne Cultural Council for sponsoring the presentation of this program.
